Sophia Hills is a condominium situated on Mt Sophia hill. Three heritage buildings within the site present both challenges and opportunities for the landscape design. The conserved buildings sit on different levels – the largest difference being 19m between two of these buildings. The long narrow site also had many undulating levels along its boundaries. The new architecture adheres mostly to the lower levels of the site whilst 2 of the historical buildings were perched on high ground. The landscape design mitigates the level differences through tiers of planters of cascading plants along a continuous landscape deck, weaving through and connecting the whole site. An internal hill was created as a green setting for the conserved buildings, honoring their historical context, thereby preserving the identity, character and sense of place of this hill site. The landscape design sensitively integrates the conserved buildings with the rest of the development, connecting old with new.
